THE OPPORTUNITY
ART Doing Good is seeking a Michigan-based artist or artist team to create an original mural at 214 S. Michigan Ave. in Downtown Howell.

Community input is being gathered from people who live, work in and visit Howell to help identify the people, places, experiences and connections that shape the community.

The selected artist will use that input as inspiration to develop an original concept in their own creative voice.

 
THE PROJECT
Location: Downtown Howell
Address: 214 S. Michigan Ave.
Available Wall: Approximately 65 ft. wide x 20 ft. high
Surface: Painted brick
Artwork Footprint: The mural is not required to fill the entire wall. The selected artist will propose the scale and placement of the artwork based on the site, community input and artistic concept.

The goal is to create original public artwork that tells the story of Howell today, reflects the people and experiences that shape the community, and creates a welcoming place for residents and visitors.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR
This opportunity is open to Michigan-based artists and artist teams, with artists from Livingston County and Southeast Michigan especially encouraged to apply.

Previous large-scale mural experience is welcome but not required. Applicants should demonstrate:

• A strong portfolio that reflects artistic style and point of view

• The ability to translate existing work to a large exterior wall

• The technical ability to execute the mural or assemble an appropriate team

• An openness to drawing inspiration from community perspectives while maintaining a distinct artistic voice

• The ability to complete the project professionally within an agreed-upon schedule and cost

The artist will be selected based on existing work, artistic approach, ability to execute the project and fit with ART Doing Good’s community-inspired process.

ARTIST SCOPE
The selected artist or artist team will:

• Review community input and become familiar with the site

• Develop and refine an original mural concept informed by that input

• Complete the approved mural within the agreed-upon schedule, scope and cost

• Provide and coordinate all materials, equipment, tools, assistants and other resources needed to complete the mural

• Participate in project documentation and a community launch or unveiling

ART Doing Good will coordinate community input, site access, communication with the property owner, project approvals, promotion and the community launch.

PROJECT COST
Applicants will be asked to provide an anticipated total project cost based on the project information provided.
Cost will be considered as part of project feasibility but will not be the primary basis for artist selection.
Final scope, responsibilities and project cost will be agreed upon with the selected artist before concept development begins.

SELECTION
Applications will be reviewed by a selection panel assembled by ART Doing Good.
Selection will consider:

• Artistic strength and originality

• Fit with the community-inspired process

• Ability to successfully execute the work at this scale

• Ability to manage the project within the proposed schedule and cost

• Professionalism and relevant experience

INFORMATION SESSION + Q&A
Artists are invited to join ART Doing Good for an optional virtual Information Session + Q&A on October 8, 2026.
We’ll provide a brief project overview and answer questions about the site, community-input process, application and project scope.
